FINDING A PREMIUM QUALITY SOFA IN TORONTO

The phrase “They don’t build ‘em like they used to…” doesn’t apply to us!

It’s come time to find a new sofa for the living room, or family room – and you know from past experience that a quality sofa makes all the difference.  Some shoppers look for luxury, others for value, many more for a specific style (traditional, contemporary or otherwise).  Whatever your penchant, it’s wise to buy the best quality sofa you can afford.  The sofa is one of the biggest furniture expenditures in the room and a well-built sofa will easily realize a decade or more in it’s intended space before being relegated to another room, the basement or the den.

So, how do you know you’re choosing a quality sofa?

1.   EVALUATE THE FRAME

First and foremost, a well-built sofa should be heavy and feel sturdy.  The heavy weight of a quality sofa originates from a solid, hardwood frame that forms the skeleton of your desired style.  Premium sofa frames are made from kiln-dried hardwood (such as oak, alder, birch, or maple) and thoroughly reinforced at the corners and joints.  Lighter, lesser sofa frames (both domestic and imported) are often made of pine – a weaker, less expensive, and structurally inferior alternative.

2.  APPRECIATE THE JOINERY

A solidly-constructed sofa, or sectional, will be thoroughly reinforced at the joints and corners.  Hardwood corner blocks are used to add strength and distribute weight to minimize load on any one particular section.  Furthermore, corner blocks should be doweled, glued and screwed – every time – to maximize strength and ensure robust construction for years of durability and enjoyment for years to come.  Substandard products will not feature this level of quality joinery reinforcements, instead opting for stapling or nailing as a quicker, cheaper alternative.

3.  ASSESS THE SPRINGS

Eight-way hand-tied web and coil spring systems are the tried and true exemplification of premium quality furnishings in Toronto and around the world.  Premium quality Sofas, Loveseats, Chairs, and Sectionals benefit from an interlocked web and coil spring system that is hand-tied together in eight directions (per spring) with the strongest twine a manufacturer can find.  High-quality springs will be plentiful, installed closely together, and feel firm.

4.  CHOOSE A DURABLE FABRIC

As you probably know, the fabric of your upholstered items is usually the first element that starts to show wear.  If you’re concerned with durability and longevity, your choice of an appropriately durable fabric is as vital as the furniture construction itself.  There are many choices to consider (including natural and synthetic options) and the process can be overwhelming.  Select a sofa manufacturer that recognizes the importance of quality fabric and leather suppliers – and provides a multitude of worthy options and for every client’s individual needs.
